Ο Άγιος Χριστοφόρος, ένας από τους πιο δημοφιλείς αγίους της λαϊκής αγιολογίας, ήταν κατά την παράδοση ένας γίγαντας με εξαιρετική δύναμη που ζούσε στην Κανάαν. Αρχικά ονόματαν Ρεπρόβος και υπηρετούσε θέλων να βρει τον πιο ισχυρό άρχοντα, μέχρι που ένας ερημίτης τον συμβούλεψε να βοηθά τους ταξιδιώτες να διασχίσουν ένα επικίνδυνο ποτάμι. Μια νύχτα, μεταφέροντας ένα μικρό παιδί, ανακάλυψε ότι το βάρος του έγινε ανυπόφορο, καθώς το παιδί αποκαλύφθηκε ότι ήταν ο ίδιος ο Χριστός, «ο φέρων τον κόσμο». Αυτό το γεγονός του χάρισε το όνομα Χριστοφόρος (ο φέρων του Χριστού). Λίγο αργότερα, ομολόγησε την πίστη του στον Ιησού και μαρτύρησε για αυτήν, γι' αυτό και τιμάται ως Προστάτης των Οδηγών και των Ταξιδιωτών.
