Святой Иоанн Русский был русским крестьянином, который был захвачен в плен и продан в рабство турецкому ага во время Русско-турецкой войны в начале XVIII века. Несмотря на тяжелое рабство, он твёрдо сохранял свою христианскую веру, выполняя свои обязанности с терпением и мягкостью, и в конце концов заслужил уважение своего хозяина. Его святость проявлялась через чудеса, самым известным из которых было перемещение тарелки из Каппадокии в Константинополь, где находился его хозяин. После его смерти в 1730 году его могила стала местом паломничества как для турок-мусульман, так и для христиан, что делает его символом межрелигиозного примирения. Его мощи были перенесены в 1924 году в Протокклеси Эвии, где он почитается с великой преданностью как чудотворец.
