Ο Άγιος Λουκάς ήταν γιατρός, ζωγράφος και συγγραφέας από τη Συρία της Αντιόχειας, που ασπάστηκε τον Χριστιανισμό και έγινε πιστός συνοδοιπόρος του Αποστόλου Παύλου. Είναι ο συγγραφέας του «Κατά Λουκάν Ευαγγελίου», που αναφέρεται ιδιαίτερα στα γεγονότα της Γέννησης και την ευσπλαγχνία του Χριστού, καθώς και των «Πράξεων των Αποστόλων», καταγράφοντας την ιστορία της πρώτης Εκκλησίας. Οι αφηγήσεις του διακρίνονται για την ιατρική του ακρίβεια και την εστίαση στα θέματα της φτώχειας, της συγχώρεσης και της καθολικότητας της σωτηρίας. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, πέθανε σε βαθιά γήρα στην Βοιωτία και τα λείψανά του σήμερα σέβονται στην Πάδουα. Η μνήμη του εορτάζεται στις 18 Οκτωβρίου και θεωρείται προστάτης άγιος των γιατρών, των ζωγράφων και των νοσηλευτών.
