Saint Catherine was an intellectual and devout Christian from the great city of Alexandria, who lived in the early 4th century AD during the persecutions of Emperor Maximinus. She was known for her intelligence and piety, as well as for her courageous dialogue with fifty philosophers who tried unsuccessfully to persuade her to abandon her faith. Saint Catherine was partially tortured and finally martyred by beheading, without renouncing her faith. According to tradition, her remains were transferred by angels to the Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai, where she is considered the patroness of the city. Her memory is honored on November 25 and is a symbol of courage, wisdom and faith.
