Ο Άγιος Εφραίμ ο Σύρος ήταν ένας σημαντικός διανοητής, ποιητής και θεολόγος του 4ου αιώνα, ο οποίος γεννήθηκε στη Νίσιβι της Μεσοποταμίας. Αφού ζούσε ως ερημίτης, αναδείχθηκε σε δάσκαλο και ιεροκήρυκα, γράφοντας πλήθος από ύμνους, ποιήματα και θεολογικά συγγράμματα που εμπλουτίζουν τη χριστιανική γραμματεία. Το έργο του είναι γνωστό για την ασκητική του διάσταση και τη βαθιά συγκίνηση που εξέφραζε για τη μετάνοια και το έλεος του Θεού, γεγονός που του χάρισε τον τίτλο «Ήχος Θείας Κιθάρας». Αν και δεν ήταν ιερέας, διορίστηκε διάκονος και υπηρέτησε την τοπική χριστιανική κοινότητα. Σήμερα τιμάται ως Οσιοποιός και η μνήμη του εορτάζεται στις 28 Ιανουαρίου, ενώ τα γραπτά του παραμένουν σημαντικά τόσο για την Ορθόδοξη όσο και για τη Ρωμαιοκαθολική Εκκλησία.
