Ο Άγιος Ραφαήλ ήταν ένας από τους επτά Αρχαγγέλους που υπηρετούν στον Θεό, γνωστός κυρίως από την αφήγηση της Βίβλου του Τωβίτ της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης. Σε αυτήν την αφήγηση, εμφανίζεται σε ανθρώπινη μορφή ως οδηγός και προστάτης του νεαρού Τωβία σε ένα επικίνδυνο ταξίδι, βοηθώντας τον να πάρει τα φάρμακα που θα γιατρεύσουν τον τυφλό πατέρα του, Τωβίτ. Ο τρόπος αυτός της παρέμβασής του του απέδωσε τον τίτλο της "Ιατρικής του Θεού" και τον κατέστησε πολιούχο των ταξιδιωτών, των γιατρών και των νοσούντων. Η λατρεία του εδραιώθηκε ιδιαίτερα μετά τη θαυματουργή εύρεση των λειψάνων του, μαζί με αυτών των Αγίων Νικολάου και Ειρήνης, στο νησί της Μυτιλήνης το 1959. Η μνήμη του εορτάζεται από την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία στις 8 Νοεμβρίου, αν και η πιο ευρεία γιορτή του ως Αρχαγγέλου είναι στις 8 Νοεμβρίου.
