Святой Рафаил был одним из семи Архангелов, служащих Богу, известный главным образом по повествованию в Книге Товита Ветхого Завета. В этом повествовании он предстает в человеческом облике в роли наставника и покровителя юного Товии в опасном путешествии, помогая ему доставить лекарства, которые должны были исцелить слепого отца Товита. Такой способ его вмешательства принес ему титул «Врач Божий» и сделал его небесным покровителем путешественников, врачей и больных. Его почитание особенно укрепилось после чудесного обнаружения его мощей вместе с мощами святых Николая и Ирины на острове Митилини в 1959 году. Память о нём отмечается Православной Церковью 8 ноября, хотя более широкое празднование его как Архангела также приходится на 8 ноября.
